LIFEGUARD

 

 

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, Assistant Manager, and Shift Supervisors, lifeguards are a non-exempt position under FLSA, responsible for the safety and well-being of the patrons of the Turner Aquatic Center. Performs lifeguarding duties as assigned by the Aquatics Director, Assistant Manager or Shift Supervisor.  This employee’s work schedule occurs during Turner Aquatic Center pool hours and includes weekdays and weeknights as well as weekends between 5 AM and 9 PM.    

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitors swimmers for safety associated with lifeguarding duties.
  • Assists or performs daily cleaning of facility and maintenance of equipment
  • Completes reports and records assigned by the Aquatics Director/Assistant Manager/Shift Supervisor.
  • Assists with preparation and clean up for daily activities and operations.
  • Assist with cleaning, pool parties, swimming lessons and all other operations or special events.
  • Promotes safety for pool participants.
  • Follows safety directives established by the City, County, State, and Federal agencies as well as by the Turner Recreation Commission and Turner USD #202.
  • Patrols the pool facilities, building, and associated grounds for the enforcement of safety rules and regulations.
  • Displays the knowledge and has the ability to perform the Emergency Action Plan.
  • Employee must maintain reliable transportation
  • Performs duties of a lifeguard as required or scheduled.

 

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Obey and comply with all Turner Recreation Commission and Turner Aquatic Center policies.
  • Report to work appropriately dressed and ready to begin shift promptly.
  • Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering the phone, conducting classes, setting up or cleaning up for party reservations, etc. as assigned by supervisory personnel.
  • Performs other duties necessary or assigned.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

 

Experience: None required but is preferred. Must be at least 15 years of age.

 

Education: Must be able to read, write, and count.

 

License/Certification: Current CPR and First Aid certification. Must possess or be able to acquire current Lifeguard Certification.

 

Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The employee must have the ability to establish successful working relationships with co-workers, volunteers, and the public and use good professional judgment, honesty, and integrity in decision making. The ability to enforce department policies and procedures and to interpret written instructions and manuals is required. Employee must be able to interact with the public in a professional manner and have verbal and written communication skills.

 

Problem Solving: Independent problem solving is key. This employee encounters problems with patron conflicts, equipment malfunctions, and citizen complaints.

 

Decision Making: Independent decision making is a key factor. This employee makes decisions about the safety of patrons as well as the ability to perform daily tasks in the most efficient manner possible.

 

Supervision: This employee is subject to supervision from the Aquatics Director, Assistant Manager, and Shift Supervisors and is responsible for supervision over the public.

 

Financial Accountability: This employee is responsible for aquatic facility equipment.

 

Personal Relations: Daily contact with the general public, co-workers, and supervisory personnel.

The employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop; kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. A 500 yard minimum swim is required every other week and the ability to perform first aid and CPR to staff and patrons is required. The employee is subject to pre-employment physical examination with a written statement from the physician as to the employee’s ability to meet the requirements of the position and also subject to drug and alcohol testing.
